Around the Campfire

Toasted marshmallow in the fire of bridges burning
I don’t know if I speak of me or my country

What friends are left? I mean, who’s coming?
We’ve abandoned most and lorded over the rest
No one likes a bully

Our legacy is British
Blood and bones ground into our soil to bake our bread I mean,
Aren’t we the ogre we pretend to be hunting?
British legacy with an American twist, like

Beans on toast with a kraft single

When we dumped tea into the harbor I wonder if they thought we would grow back into the skin we were shedding
Did all of those brave, angry shadows in our history
Shrouded in our flag and cannon fire,
Did they see this coming in the waves they were making?

When our good old boys died on the front lines and won did they dream their children would willingly don the uniform of our enemy

Or, better yet, uniforms made up of jokes, like
Memes coming for us in the night, like
Haunted by corners of the internet most people didn’t know existed
And we’re supposed to be afraid

They get to laugh while they dehumanize us into nothing
It’s almost more insidious
Leaning into the thing that makes fascism so accessible
Mixing it with Boys will be Boys

They’re packing up our people
Shipping them over oceans to land they‘ve never seen
Logistical nightmare born from the red -pill waving chainsaws at the head of this nation
They’ll laugh off the salute, too

The hyenas are in power
There is no Hakuna Matata hiding in the woods
We can laugh louder, though
Take the last one from them

Dig our boots in because we come from the same history
Of murder, of genocide, of displacement, yes
But
Of rebels who fought the right war cloaked in dew, too

With all of the things we’ve learned since
Our ancestors crawled through mud toting misfiring rifles
We can make our drum beat louder
We don’t have to distance ourselves from that part of us, we just have to do it better

Hone the energy of D-Day like a weapon
Overwhelm them with how small they really are
Take the beach, take the states
Remind them that we have, so so slowly, replaced the bone pillars of this country with foundation

Remind them what all that “woke” progress was for
Unify, stand shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors
Wave our flag high so the world understands we’ve been invaded by
Narcissistic flesh -eating blow flies burrowing into our institutions, like

Plague rats, like
Our streets will run with blood and shit but I’m not afraid to stand in it
There are Bigger Things to tackle
I can fight with memes if I have to, too

If that’s the only way they’ll get it
Remove the fascists, Rebuild better, Remember climate change
*shrug
That’s just three things

Three long days, and
Rome burned in one
